DRAWING A CROWD...is what Renee Otte did when she had the ball in her hands, but she shill had 18 points in the Covington win.
February 11, 2008 BROOKVILLE
The Covington Lady Buccs duplicated an early-season victory over Arcanum with a 43-34 victory over the Lady Trojans to open the Sectional Tournament.
The victory improves Covington's record to 7-14 and sets up a showdown with Bethel on Thursday for a chance to play in the Sectional Final on Saturday.
Covington jumped out to a 10-1 lead, but Arcanum battled back to score 12 unanswered points and take a 21-18 lead into the locker room.
Much of that was due to the half-court trap Arcanum used to slow Covington's offense. The Lady Buccs struggled holding onto the ball and was forced into numerous turnovers (21 for the game).
Covington adjusted in the second half by attacking the pressure and the result was a 28-27 lead after three periods of play.
But the momentum swung again, for a short time, as Shelby Hoblit picked up her fourth foul midway through the fourth quarter.
Alyssa Angle was able to score on a stick back, while Kayla Fissel connected on two treys and Renee Otte hit on four free throws to seal the contest.
Otte led the way with a game-high 18 points, while Fissel scored nine on three 3-pointers.
Hoblit pulled down 12 rebounds and scored 7 points.
Arcanum was led by Emily Schellhaas with 10 points, while Devon Meyer scored 9 points and Angie Cates had 8 points.
The Lady Trojans end their season at 8-13 overall, while Covington advances to play Bethel.
