February 24, 2008 KETTERING
Five Cross County Conference wrestlers qualified for the 2008 state wrestling meet to be held in Columbus later this week.
Miami East led the way with three of the five state placers with two-time state champ, three-time state state placer and now four-time state qualifier Ryan Gambill claiming the lone district title at 135 pounds. In a rematch of the sectional final, Gambill (32-2) defeated Troy Christian's Jordan Thome 8-2 in the championship match.
Also headed to state with fourth place finishes are freshman A.J. Ganger (22-14) at 103 pounds and senior Cody McGillvary (35-8) at 140 pounds.
After a one-year hiatus, Covington sends a wrestler back to state as Andrew DeHart became the first Buccaneer freshman to become a state qualifier. DeHart (43-4) captured third after defeating returning state placer Mike Eavers of Greenview 4-0 in the consolation final.
National Trail's Nick Hiestand (40-4) made good on his quest for a state birth with a fourth place finish at 171 pounds. After capturing a sectional championship, Hiestand battled his way through a tough 171 pounds weight class to advance to the consolation final with a 6-4 decision over Corey Thompson of West Liberty Salem. The victory assured Hiestand a ticket to the state tournament despite a narrow loss in the consolation final.
Falling just short of a state birth were Jacob Huffman of Tri-County North and Chris Heiss of Miami East.
Huffamn, a 103 pound freshman, rebounded from a tough loss to record a 16-0 tech. fall victory over Alex Nedved of Clinton Massie to claim fifth place, while Heiss claimed sixth at 112 pounds.
CrossCountyConference.com would like to congratulate all the CCC wrestlers for an outstanding tournament and wish those who earned a state birth the best of luck.
