February 16, 2008 COVINGTON
Several Cross County Conference wrestlers had a memorable sectional tournament at Covington High School over the weekend as each team qualified at least one wrestler to the district meet.
Two CCC wrestlers finished the weekend as Sectional Champions, National Trail's Nick Hiestand at 171 pounds and Miami East's Ryan Gambill at 135 pounds.
In the most exciting final's match, Nick Hiestand of National Trail pinned Troy Christian's Sam Atkins - a performance that drew a standing ovation from the crowd. Hiestand entered the tournament with a 33-2 record and defeated Covington's Joe Evans and West Liberty Salem's Corey Thompson to advance to the finals.
Gambill, a two-time state champion and three-time state placer, faced Troy Christian's Jordan Thome in the weekend's most highly anticipated match-up. Gambill controlled the match throughout en route to an 11-1 major decision.
Joining Gambill at districts next week will be A.J. Ganger (3rd at 103 lbs.), Chris Heiss (2nd at 112 lbs.), Zane Goldberg (2nd at 119 lbs.) and Cody McGillvary (2nd at 140 lbs.).
Covington had four wrestlers qualify for the district meet with freshman Andrew DeHart leading the way with a second place finish at 130 pounds. DeHart entered the tournament with a 36-2 record and cruised to the finals with wins over D.J. Byers of Arcanum and Logan Robinson of Dixie. DeHart faced Zac Hancock of Troy Christian in the finals, but dropped a hard-fought bout to finish as runner-up.
Also qualifying for Covington was Matt Breisch (4th at 112 lbs.), Sam Herron (4th at 119 lbs.) and Justin McMillion (3rd at 152 lbs.).
Tri-County North saw three wrestlers make it out of sectionals with freshman sensation Jacob Huffman leading the way with a second place finish at 103 pounds. Huffman gave Troy Christian's Jordan Hancock all he could handle before dropping the championship match.
Joining Huffman at districts will be Bryce Dudley (4th at 135 lbs.) and Stephen Schlater (4th at 171 lbs.).
Arcanum, a surging young program, saw two of its wrestlers make it out of the toughest sectional in the state as freshman Jared Beatty finished fourth at 103 pounds and Sam Pankratz took fourth at 215 pounds.
CrossCountyConference.com would like to congratulate all the CCC wrestlers who competed at the sectional tournament and wish those who qualified for the district meet the best of luck.
