2008 STATE WRESTLING TOURNAMENT

GAMBILL DOMINATES...Ryan Gambill of Miami East became a three-time state champion.

National Trail's Nick Hiestand competes at 171 pounds.
Senior Cody McGillvary of Miami East at 140 pounds.
103 pounder A.J. Ganger of Miami East.
March 1, 2008 – COLUMBUS
Five Cross County Conference wresters entered the 2008 State Wrestling tournament and three days of wrestling two earned a spot on the podium.

Miami East's Ryan Gambill was arguably the most dominant wrestler in the entire tournament as he didn't give up a single offensive points en route to his third state championship. Gambill pinned Jordan Thome of Troy Christian 1:30 into the first period in his championship match.

Gambill was never really threatened throughout his path to the championship match. The Viking senior won 15-0, 8-1 and 11-1 in his three matches to advance to the finals and set up a third meeting in the last three weeks against Thome. The two wrestled each other in the sectional and district finals, with Gambill winning each match.

Miami East had two other wrestlers compete at state, with both dropping on opening night.

A.J. Ganger (103 lbs.) fell to Spencer Pierce of Richwood in his opening round match and then bowed out of the tournament with a loss to David Harrington of Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic in the first round of Consolations.

Viking senior Cody McGillvary nearly pulled out a come-from-behind win in his opening match against Robert Pajestka of Cleveland Cuyahoga Heigths. He came back from a 5-3 deficit to tie the score at 5-5 at the end of regulation, but allowed the takedown and two back points in the overtime session.

McGillvary then saw his tournament come to an end in his next match against Joshua Goebel of Edgerton.

Covington's Andrew DeHart became the first freshman in school history to qualify for state and the youngest state placer with a sixth place finish at 130 pounds.

DeHart won his first match 10-2, but lost a 12-11 heartbreaker to Marion Pleasant's Cody Coomes in the Championship Quarterfinals. DeHart rebounded with two straight wins to secure a spot on the podium and then dropped his final two matches to take sixth.

National Trail was represented at the state tournament by Nick Hiestand at 171 pounds. Hiestand dropped his first two matches to J.D. Smyers of Creston Norwayne and Bryan Panzano of Gahanna Columbus Academy to see his outstanding career come to an end. Hiestand was a sentimental favorite of many after a thrilling sectional championship victory two weeks ago.

Congratulations to these five wrestlers for representing your schools and the CCC at the state wrestling tournament.
