BETHEL MAKES A STATEMENT

WHAT A NIGHT...Ryan Mayes and the Bethel Bees had in a 38-6 victory over Ansonia.

The Bethel Bees have struggled with injuries and untimely turnovers throughout the first half of the season. The breaks just hasn't went Bethel's way as they dropped two games by one point and held a modest 2-3 record heading into a big showdown with Ansonia, Friday.

The Tigers came into the contest riding a four-game winning streak and looking forward to keeping the momentum rolling with huge match-up with unbeaten Covington awaiting on the horizon.

In a highly anticipated contest Bethel thoroughly dominated from start to finish en route to a 38-6 victory - making a statement that they are a team to be reckoned with in the final weeks of the season.

Senior scat back Ryan Mayes was phenomenal, rushing for 234 yards on 20 carries and scoring three touchdowns. His touchdowns came on runs of 9, 64 and 8 yards.

Meanwhile, the Bethel defense held Eric Beisner to just 54 yards on 14 carries and the Ansonia offense to just 147 total yards.

Bethel started the scoring in the first quarter with a 12-yard pass from John Prior to Troy Diltz.

An 18-point second period followed as Mayes scooted in from nine yards and Adam Vandergrift scored on a 39-yard fumble recovery.

After the Tigers scored their lone touchdown on a 25-yard pass from Chance Cox to Bubeck, Mayes gave the Bees a 25-6 lead on a 64-yard run.

Bethel had one more chance to score before the half as Mayes intercepted a Tiger pass in Ansonia territory.

But time ran out leaving the score at 25-6 with the second half to play.

Bethel kept on rolling on offense in the third period as Curtis Hoffman extended the lead to 31-6 on a 9-yard run.

Fittingly, Mayes then closed out the show with his third touchdown of the night.

Bethel improves to 3-3 overall and 3-2 in conference play, while Ansonia drops to 4-2 and 4-1 in the CCC.

Bethel returns home next week against Arcanum, while Ansonia makes the trip to Covington to face the unbeaten Buccaneers.
