VIKINGS LIVING HISTORY

ONE-WAY TICKET TO WEEK 11...is what the Miami East Vikings have claimed with a dominating 35-0 victory over Arcanum.

Story by Dwayne Maxson
The Miami East's Sam Smallwood broke the Vikings' single season rushing record with a 255 yard rushing performance in a 35-0 over Arcanum. The win gave them their most wins since 1984 when they finished 9-1 and runnerup in the now defunct Southwestern Rivers Conference. As a team the Vikings finished with 435 yards rushing on the night.

Sam Smallwood came into the game needing just 76 yards to break the single season rushing record. He was also tied with Rich McKinney for the most rushing touchdowns in a season.

On Miami East first offensive play Sam Smallwood ran 61 yards for an early 7-0 lead. Later in the first quarter the Vikings' Tyler Dunivan ran in from 8 yards out to make it 14-0. Smallwood then added another touchdownd in the second quarter on a 16 yard run and a 21-0 Viking lead. He would then score on his first carry of the third quarter on a 59 yard run to make it 28-0. The final Viking score came in the four quarter when Senior David Jackson scored on a 2 yard run to make it 35-0.

Sam Smallwood finished the regular season holding two Viking single season records. The most rushing yards with 1,418 and rushing touchdowns with 21. "He played really hard tonight and throughout the season," commented Viking Coach Max Current. "Sam has been putting in the extra effort in practice and it has been paying off all season. It was really special to see him break the rushing record. That record was last set when I was a freshman here back in 1977. So, that is really impressive. Then he also broke the touchdown record last set back in 1963 by Rich McKinney that is amazing!"

The Viking defense manage to hold the Trojans scoreless and to just 133 yards in total offense. It was their first shutout since 2003. "Our defense did a great job tonight and has preformed pretty good this season," said Coach Current.

The win most likely also secured the first playoff appearance in school history. "We don't know for certain yet whether we are in or not. By tomorrow we should have a good idea and a definite answer on Sunday," replied Coach Current. "At this point we don't care who we end up playing. Just getting and doing our best will be great for our program. It would also be a great learning experience for us."
