VIKES KEEP ALIVE QUEST TOWARD HISTORY

A RUN TOWARD HISTORY...Sam Smallwood and the Miami East Vikings are in search of their place in Viking football history as they hope to become the school's first playoff team.

As each week passes, the Miami East Vikings are getting closer and closer to making school history - to become the first Viking team to qualify for the state play-offs.

After a 20-6 victory over a rugged and determined Ansonia team, Miami East has one more hurdle to clear to secure a spot in the top 8 in Region 20. That hurdle is a road trip to Arcanum in the regular season finale.

Should Miami East win, they'll be in.

Ansonia came into the game with its own playoff life on the line. If the Tigers were to win out by defeating Miami East and then Twin Valley South in week ten, they had a chance to finish with enough computer points to reach the playoff in Region 24.

But Miami East was too much as the backfield of Sam Smallwood, Tyler Dunivan and Houston Walker spearheaded a rushing attack that resulted in 304 yards.

Smallwood was the workhorse, rushing for 194 yards on 26 carries and scoring 2 touchdowns.

Meanwhile, the Viking defense was stellar in containing Ansonia's talented backfield of Eric Beisner and Dylan Bubeck. The Tiger managed just 126 yards on the ground and 180 total yards.

After a scoreless first quarter, Miami East finally got on the board with a 25-yard field goal by Josh Matheson.

Smallwood then increased the Viking lead to 10-0 at the half as he powered his way in from 6 yards out.

The score remained 10-0 until Beisner found his way into the end zone on a two-yard run in the early moments of the fourth quarter. The attempt for a two-point conversion failed, but the Tigers were within striking distance, trailing 10-6.

Like all playoff caliber teams do, the Vikings made plays in crunch time.

Matheson connected on his second field goal of the night from 26 yards out to increase the lead to 13-6 and then Smallwood put the game away in grand fashion - a 54 yard run.

The loss virtually ends all hope of Ansonia playing in week eleven as it drops to 5-4 overall and 5-3 in the CCC.

Miami East, 7-2 overall and 7-1 in the CCC, plays for history next week at Arcanum. With a win, the Vikings are in.
