MIAMI EAST DOMINATES BETHEL

ON A ROLL...are the Miami East Vikings after a second straight shutout victory.

By Dwaine Maxson
SEPTEMBER 5, 2008 - CASSTOWN
Miami East rolled to victory over Bethel by a score 49-0. Sam Smallwood tied for another career record. Also, for the first time since 1990 the Viking defense has recorded two shutouts in a season while holding the Bees to just 12 yards in total offense.

Tyler Dunivan got the Vikings started by scoring on their first offensive play of the night on a 47 yard run for a touchdown. Later in the first quarter Rod Sotzing caught a 24 yard pass from Justin Baker for a touchdown. Then in the second quarter Sam Smallwood and Tyler Dunivan both scored touchdowns to put the Vikings up 28-0 at the half.

Smallwood scored his second touchdown of the night on a 12 yard run. As a result he is now tied with Rich McKinney (who played from 1961 to 1963) with 37 career rushing touchdowns. “For Smallwood to tie a record held by Rich McKinney is impressive,” Coach Current later said. “It is really a team accomplishment and something they can all be proud of.” Tyler Dunivan completed the third quarter scoring on a 25 yard run to make it 42-0. After that the Vikings played their reserves. Brady McMaken scored the final Miami East touchdown in the fourth quarter to make it 49-0.

The Vikings finished the night with two 100 yard rushers. Smallwood lead the way with 138 yards on 17 carries while Tyler Dunivan had 116 yards on just 8 carries.

“We have a tough game next week versus the Buccs and we need to have a great week at practice,” Current told his players after the game.

Next week Miami East travels to Covington while Bethel hosts Twin Valley South.
