Miami East sailed to a 44-0 victory over Mississinawa Valley. The Vikings had 426 yards in total offense, including 350 on the ground. The Blackhawks could not get anything going on the night as the Vikings held them to just 57 total yards.
The Vikings' Sam Smallwood led the attack with 129 yards on just 13 carries for 2 touchdowns. In the process he managed to break Miami East's career rushing record previously held by Tim Roddy who played from 1974 to 1977 and had 2,812 yards. Smallwood now has 2,818 yards rushing in his career.
"I was a freshman here when Roddy was a senior, so to see Sam break his record is a great accomplishment. It is also a great accomplishment for our team," Coach Max Current said.
Tyler Dunivan also had 98 yards on just 8 carries for 2 touchdowns.
After a struggle with penalties the Vikings got the early lead with a Tyler Dunivan 10 yard run for the touchdown in the first quarter. Then in the second quarter the Vikings really go going by jumping out to a 28-0 lead going into halftime. Dalton Saylor got the scoring going in the second quarter by catching a 29 yard pass from Justin Baker. Later Smallwood scored his first on a 5 yard run. Dunivan capped off the first half scoring with an 8 yard run.
On the first offensive series of the third quarter Sam Smallwood ran the ball on all 4 plays to lead the Vikings to a 35-0 lead. Including a 38 yard run to get the drive inside the 10 yard line on the second play from scrimmage. Two plays later he scored his second touchown on a 2 yard run.
Miami East's defense then scored some points of their own when Tyler Beard tackled a Mississinawa back in the endzone for a safety. The Vikings' scored their final score on a Brock Smith 17 yard run.
"We played better this week, but we can still improve," Coach Current said. Next week the Vikings host Bethel in their home opener, while the Blackhawks travel to Twin Valley South.
