VIKES PREP FOR STRETCH RUN

OUR TIME...is what Coach Current and the Miami East Vikings are hoping for as they prepare for two big games to close out the season.

By Dwaine Maxson
OCTOBER 10, 2008 - CASSTOWN
MThe Vikings celebrated homecoming in style with a 62-0 victory over National Trail. They also honored their 50th Anniversary Football Team (which roster can be viewed on the school's website) during the pre-game and at halftime. Miami East gained 493 yards in total offense, 440 of it on the ground. The Vikings also broke the school record for the most points in a season, previously held by the 1962 team which had 366, they now have 397 on the season.

Other accomplishments for Miami East included their fourth shutout of the season which is the first time since 1983 that they have had at least four shutouts in a season. Sam Smallwood gained 148 yards on 6 carries and one touchdown on the night to give him 1,049 yards rushing on the season. This is the third time in his career of gaining over 1,000 yards in a season. He was only one of three ever to do it twice in their career as a Viking and now is the first to do it three times.

Miami East got the scoring going early when Tyler Dunivan scored on a 63 yard run on their first offensive possession. Then the Viking defense got one of their own when Kyle Karadak intercepted Blazer Taylor Neal's pass and returned it 36 yards for a score. Later Justin Baker threw a 53 yard touchdown pass to Brock Smith to make it 21-0 in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Vikings had another quick short drive capped off by a 22 yard toucdown run by Tyler Dunivan. After stopping another National Trail drive again the Vikings' Jared Brown scored on a 70 yard punt return to make it 34-0. Later Sam Smallwood capped off another drive with a 39 yard touchdown run. Brock smith finished off the first half scoring with a 5 yard after being set up on the Blazers' five yard by an 80 yard run by Dunivan.

Miami East opened up the second half with a Brock Smith 92 yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Vikings final score came in the fourth on a 20 yard run by Kevin McMaken.

Another top performer on the night was Tyler Dunivan who gained 165 yards rushing on just three carries and two touchdowns.

"Dunivan continues to work hard and it is showing on Friday nights," commented Viking coach Max Current. He also said, "We need to continue to work hard and get better. We have a tough game with Ansonia next week. Eugene Hoening always has his kids playing hard and ready to play. It should be a tough but fun game."

Next week Miami East travels to Ansonia, while National Trail hosts Twin Valley South.
