WHAT'S NEXT?...is the question after some unexpected scores in week three of the 2008 season.
Just when you think you have it all figured out when it comes to Cross County Conference football, the unexpected happens where four out of the five games ended in blowouts.
First, Ansonia destroyed Bradford 51-0. It wasn't the fact that Ansonia came out with a win over a young Bradford team with a first-year head coach, but not many expected a 51-point win.
Ansonia traditionally fields a solid football team and coach Hoening always has his team prepared. But Bradford appeared to be a much improved team on week two's loss to Covington and many thought it was a matter of time before the Railroaders turned the corner - which they may do very soon. But the manhandling Ansonia put on Bradford makes for some serious head scratching.
Coming into the season Miami East was a pre-season favorite of many to challenge for the top spot in the CCC - and they still are. So it's no surprise the Vikings captured a win over Bethel on their home field, but a closer game was to be expected considering the Bees always get up for Miami East.
Unfortunately for Bethel, the youth and inexperience compared to what Miami East put on the field was just too much. The Vikings got up big early and cruised to a 49-0 shutout win.
Many expected a close game between Covington and Tri-County North - two teams in similar situations. Both entered the game at 1-1 and with a roster full of younger players. Plus, North has three seniors, while Covington has four - which made for an interesting match-up.
That was until the first minute of the game as Covington took control from the outset and never looked back. The Buccs scored touchdowns on all seven possessions of the first half and it was more than enough for a 49-20 win.
In week one Arcanum suffered a 69-0 loss and many wrote the Trojans off as a team in a rebuilding mode with a new coach and young players.
But an impressive win last week over Twin Valley South gave the Trojans come confidence and Arcanum followed with a 45-14 shellacking of National Trail on Friday.
Suddenly, Arcanum is tied for the conference lead at 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCC. Plus, those younger kids are gaining experience with every snap, which makes them even more dangerous as the weeks progress.
The most competitive game of the weekend was Twin Valley South's 33-20 victory over Mississinawa Valley.
Proof that things can change in a hurry, the Blackhawks were riding high as the only CCC team to win in week one - while the rest of the teams in the conference were licking their wounds from frustrating losses.
Three weeks are in the books and there still is no clear cut favorite as to who will be sitting atop the CCC mountain at season's end. A slate of big games are scheduled for week four and the plot will only thicken once the results come in.
