Everyone has heard of Michelle Meyer, the standout senior guard for the Covington Lady Buccs who is on her way to joining her brother, Jason at Darmouth next year to play college basketball. Michelle has her name all over the Covington record books with over 1,300 career points.
For those who haven't heard, there is another Meyer who is adding her name to the Covington record books and making a name for herself as well. No, Michelle doesn't have a sister, but her younger cousin, Andrea can shoot the lights out as well. Her performances in two games this week is proof and may only be a sign of what's to come.
In wins over Ansonia and New Bremen, Meyer drilled a total of 11 treys and averaged 20.5 pionts in the two contests.
On Tuesday against Ansonia, Andrea set a school record with seven treys in a 64-32 win for Covington. Meyer also led all scorers with 25 points.
Accustom to seeing her elder cousin receive the attention, Andrea was a little shy when an interview was requested after her big performance.
"I've never done this (an interview) before, so I don't know how good I'll be," said a seemingly embarrassed and soft spoken Meyer.
Once she relaxed, Meyer opened up and talked like a seasoned professional.
"I've been feeling more comfortable with my shot since the Russia game (on December 29th)," said Meyer. "It kind of carried through to tonight and I really felt comfortable towards the middle of the game."
Although it seemed as though she couldn't miss and shots kept dropping from everywhere behind the arc, Meyer wasn't aware of a school record until she was informed of her accomplishment by a close teammate.
"I didn't even know anything about a school record until Michelle (Meyer) told me during the game," said Andrea. "She (Michelle) just kept telling me to shoot so I would get it."
Once Meyer canned her seventh trey for the school record she was pulled from the game and greeted by her cousin and the rest of her teammates.
For her outstanding accomplishment, Andrea Meyer is our Athlete of the Week and with the way she can shoot the ball don't be surprised to see her name again.
