To say Arcanum's Brooke Strayer was a favorite entering the 2006 Regional Track Meet at Piqua's Alexander Stadium would be an understatement.
After all, she entered the meet with the best time of the sixteen competitors in the 300 meter hurdles (45.95). The closest time anyone had coming in was National Trail's, Jennifer McWinney with a time of 47.18.
In the preliminaries on Wednesday, Strayer made a statement that she was the competitor to beat by running the best time of 45.98.
Again, the closest competitor was McWhinney, who won the second heat with a time of 47.30.
The finals went as planned for the Arcanum senior, despite gusty wind that made running difficult on every competitor.
Strayer was pushed by only McWhinney as both runners finished ahead of the rest of the pack by nearly a second...which is a lifetime at the regional level.
Strayer walked off the track a Regional Champion after winning in the time of 46.12.
In the process, Strayer made another statement that she is a ligitimate threat to challenge for a state title in Columbus.
For her impressive performance at the 2006 Regional Track Meet, Arcanum's Brooke Strayer is our "Athlete of the Week".
