The Bethel Bees basketball team has been on a roll as of late, despite a two-point loss to Yellow Springs on Saturday.
Folks may question how a team can be on a roll when they had just lost a game, but when you look at the facts, it's very easy to say Bethel is on a roll.
Consider, Bethel captured a big win over Covington last weekend and since they have defeated Miami Valley and Franklin Monroe, before losing to Yellow Springs. The defeat to Yellow springs can be excused as the Bees have to turn around Monday and face Twin Valley South before finishing the regular season on Friday against Tri-Village.
That's six games in 15 days against a brutal schedule, including three of those games in a four-day span...one being the two-point loss to Yellow Springs.
Still, the Bees remain in contention for a conference title with a 13-5 overall record and an 8-1 record in the CCC.
There have been many outstanding performers that have led to Bethel's success, but one in particular hasn't received much recognition outside of Brandt and that player is Mike Key.
Kley isn't the team's leading scorer or rebounder, but what he has been is a stead leader.
In Bethel's win over Covington Kley scored 7 points, but his biggest impact was frustrating Covington shooters and forcing them into tough shots. He was a key reason the Buccs only converted on 2 of 18 treys.
Friday against Franklin Monroe, the senior had a significant impact as a scorer. He torched the nets for a game-high 22 points, including two back-breaking treys in leading the Bees to a 67-51 win.
In the narrow loss against Yellow Springs on Saturday, the Bees overcame a 15-point half time deficit and nearly pulled out the win, falling 56-54. This, in a game where there really wasn't much of an incentive to win considering the two big conference games looming on the horizon.
But, the Bees played with pride and surged back in the second half to get back into the game. Kley, who scored 13 points on the night, was a key contributor with his leadership. Along with teammate, Tony Phillips, Kley led the Bees went on an 11-0 run in the fourth to tie the score 48-48.
For his leadership all season and helping keep the Bees in contention for the CCC title with one week left in the regular season, Bethel's Mike Kley is our Athlete of the Week.
