Previously we selected four CCC performers for "Athlete of the Week" for reaching milestones in career points in basketball. Those selections were Franklin Monroe's Abbey Davenport, Newton's Kyler Booher, Twin Valley South's Dale Spitler, and Covington's Daren Rhoades.
The milestone in which those four players reached was 1,000 career points, which is a very impressive accomplishment.
So, this weeks selection has to be a given as Covington's Michelle Meyer surpassed 1,500 career points this week with a 19-point effort in a 59-32 win over Mississinawa Valley in the opening round of the sectional tournament.
With 1,516 career points, only two players in the history of Covington basketball have scored more, Lynette Roeth (1,879 points) and Tom Dunn (1,721 points).
Meyer, who will be joining her older brother Jason at Dartmouth this fall, also ranks first in scoring among her family, which is no small task since two others both have scored at least 1,000 career points.
Jason has 1,492 career points, while their father Jay has 1,000 points. Keep in mind, Jay's 1,000 career points came prior to the three-point shot and legend has it many of his points came from well beyond today's three-point barrier.
To say basketball runs in the blood of the Meyer family would be an understatement as three more Meyers are or were pretty darn good.
Michelle's uncle, Jim Meyer accumulated 713 career points, 440 of those coming in the 1973-74 season. Michelle's cousin Jared, who played with Jason, tallied 836 career points.
Then there is Jim's daughter, Jared's sister and Michelle's younger cousin Andrea, who is currently a junior for the Lady Buccs. Andrea is well on her way to adding to the Meyer legacy as she has become a potent scoring machine as well. Andrea owns the school record for treys in a game with 7 three-pointers earlier this season against Ansonia.
When you look at the accomplishments in the Meyer family, it is rather amazing. But, when you look at what Michelle has done over the years as part of some very talented teams, it's mind boggling.
Consider, Michelle has played on three district qualifiers and has a chance to reach the districts for the fourth year in a row. Plus, she has played with other outstanding players, including Logan Greher and Heather Fields, along with her cousin Andrea. This fact proves she has never been a one women show.
For her historic accomplishment, CrossCountyConference.com is proud to announce Michelle Meyer as our Athlete of the Week.
