PHOTO: Newton rebounded from an early exit a year ago to claim the district title with a win over Seven Hills.

The Newton Indians softball team has become accustom to long tournament runs and district championships.

But, last year their season came to an abrupt end against conference rival Bradford in the tournament, leaving a bad taste in the mouths of returning players.

Kirk Kadel and his Lady Indians removed that taste on Friday with an 11-2 shellacking of Seven Hills to claim yet another District Championship at Wayne High School.

Newton pounded the ball for 16 hits on the day and capitalized on Seven Hills errors to improve to 25-5 on the season and advance to the regional against Triad.

The Lady Indians took a 3-0 by scoring a run in each of their first three at bats.

Seven Hills mounted a comeback in its half of the third with 2 runs of its own.

Newton responded in the fourth with 5 runs and and then 2 more in the fifth.

Meanwhile, Laura Adams and the Indian defense shut down Seven Hills, holding them scoreless the rest of the way for the 11-2 win. Seven Hills only had 5 hits on the day.

Katie Stewart was hot at the plate as she went 4 for 5 on the day and recorded 4 runs-batted-in. Stewart also had a big triple that scored two runs.

Nichole Diers finished the game 2 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBI and 2 runs.

The Indians continue their tournament run on Wednesday at 5:00 PM at Wayne High School against Triad, while Seven Hills bows out with a 16-6 record.

Triad comes into the the contest off of a 12-0 shutout over Covington and fielding the same record as Newton, 25-5. Also, earlier in the year Triad run-ruled Bradford twice in a double header.
